Grace Libby Vollmer was born September 12, 1884 in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Starting in 1899 she attended an all girls' private school, Quincy Manse, which specialized in instruction in painting. In 1901 Grace's family moved to Idaho, where her father changed profession from publisher to engineer. Five years after moving there, she met and married Ralston Vollmer. They moved to their own place in Lewiston, Idaho, and had two children, John and Ann Vollmer. For nineteen years she devoted herself entirely to her family, but in 1925 she decided to restart her formal artistic career and convinced her husband to make the move to Los Angeles. There, she attended the Otis Art Institute for two years, and after her studies were finished she joined the artists represented at the Cannel and Chaffin gallery in Los Angeles. She traveled to Europe and was a pupil of Hans Hofmann and continued with him when she returned to California. By 1936 her style had solidified, she had frequently entered into juried exhibitions, and her work was reviewed as competent and refreshing. She outlived her husband and both children and continued to paint until 1970 and died in 1977.
