Boris Mikhailovich Lavrenko was a Russian Soviet realist painter. He was born on May 6, 1920 in the city of Rostov on Don. He studied at the Rostov on Don Art School. He participated in his first exhibit early on in his career. He painted portraits and historical landscapes. In 1940 he was drafted into the military. He went from Moscow to Berlin as an artilleryman. He often did drawings of the front-lines, his portraits providing an interesting documentary and truth of war. After demobilization in 1946, he entered the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Upon graduation he worked in various workshops. His style became distinguished by his use of board and energetic brushstrokes, artistic transfer of tonal relations and states of lighting. In 1953, Lavrenko became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists, which has since been renamed to be the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists. In 1994, he was awarded the honorary title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, among other awards.
