(Camargo, Oklahoma, 1908 - 2008, Claremont, California)

James Milford Zornes was born in Camargo, Oklahomo. He was a painter and designer who studied with F. Toles Chamberlain and Millard Sheets from 1935 to '38. While studying with Chamberlain and Sheets, he was also a student at Otis Art Institute (1938) before further training at Pomona College (1946-50). On the faculties of Otis (1938-46), Pomona (1946-50), and the University of California at Santa Barbara (1948-49), Zornes was also an official army artist during World War II. In his own words, he is "an abstract realist" in "transparent watercolor and other media." Zornes's work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the National Academy of Design in New York City, the White House in Washington D.C., and many other collections all over the country. The winner of numerous awards throughout a long career, James Milford Zornes was, like Maynard Dixon before him, a resident of Mount Carmel, Utah. He died on February 24, 2008 in his Claremont, California home.
