Laura Gardin Fraser

(1889 - 1966)

Laura Gardin Fraser was an American sculptor born in 1889. She studied under James Earle Fraser, whom she later married, at the Art Students League of New York from 1910-1912. In 1924 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an associate member, and became a full academician in 1931. She and her husband designed a number of U.S. Coins, notably the 1921 Alabama Centennial half dollar, the 1922 Grand Memorial Half Dollar and others. In 1931 she was the winner of a competition to design a new quarter with George Washington on it. Her design was coined as a commemorative five-dollar gold piece. Although mostly recognized for her medallic contributions, she has outstanding commissions for heroic-size sculpture. These include a double equestrian statue of Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in Baltimore as well as others. Her work was a part of the art competitions at the 1928 and 1932 summer Olympics.
