James C. Blankenship

(1933 – )

James Blankenship is a professor emeritus of the Boise State University Art Department. From Boise State University Fine Arts Gallery, retrospective exhibition: In this birthday retrospective, James Blankenship, Emeriti Faculty, presents his 60-year exploration of the expressive potential of painting. Forging a relationship between the figurative tradition emphasized in his artistic education and the abstract tradition so dominant in the art world for much of his creative life, Blankenship’s relation to the art of the past is not merely extractive. Through an interplay between naturalism and abstraction, his work moves toward the reminiscent technique of earlier artists such as Rembrandt, Velazquez, Degas, and Van Gogh, even as he delves into imagery of the Intermountain West.
