Emma Stoltz Smart
(Buffalo, New York, 1862 - 1924, Provo, Utah)
Emma Stoltz Hamberg Smart of Salt Lake City, Utah, studied art in New York before coming to Utah as a Mormon convert. A native of Buffalo, New York, she never wished to take up the challenge of a professional painter's career, but rather rendered with authentic personal conviction a number of Utah landscape views and flower pictures before her death in her early sixties. Her husband, Dr. George L. Smart, presented a collection of sixty-four paintings (including examples by his wife as well as other Utah artists) to the Springville Gallery (SMA) in 1925.
