John Fabian Carlson was born in Smaland, Sweden, in 1875. In 1884, he and his family immigrated to New York, where they settled down in Buffalo. There, Carlson attended evening art classes at the Art Students League of Buffalo, New York. He was also able to receive instruction from Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock, who had formerly studied at the Académie Colarossi in Paris and the Art Students League of New York.
