Waldo Park Midgley

(Salt Lake City, UT, 1888 - 1986, Salt Lake City, UT)

Waldo Park Midgley was a painter, illustrator, printmaker, and teacher. He was born, raised, and died in Salt Lake City, Utah, but also spent a lot of time on the East Coast. Midgley studied with Mahonri Young in Utah from 1905-1907. In 1908 he studied at the New York School of Art. He was fortunate enough to study under Robert Henri, John Sloan, George Bellows, and Walt Kuhn until 1912. He continued training under Robert Henri while in New York. Midgley had a lot of professional success in New York, and was employed by some of the nation's most prestigious agencies and publications. Midgley painted the newly completed Empire State Building before its communication tower was erected and tenants began to occupy its offices. The painting was shipped to Salt Lake City to Midgley's friend, Taylor Woolley, whose studio in the McIntire Building was used to prepare Midgley's exhibition at the Art Barn on Finch Lane. The Deseret News of Saturday the 19th of December 1936 reviews the exhibition: By all means visit the Art Barn galleries this week. The strength, buoyancy and craftsmanship... make the trip well worthwhile... As one steps into the gallery, Mr. Midgley's painting Empire State Building smites one right between the eyes... Mr. Midgley cannot only paint dramatically... [but] his art can interpret the prosaic, the lyric, the poetic sides of life just as well.
