Victor G. Sevastyanov

(Kiev, Ukraine, 1923 - 1993)

Victor G Sevastyanov was a Soviet football player and painter. He was the only Soviet football player at his level who also became a famous artist. After finishing ninth grade, Sevastyanov went to work as mechanic in a gang. He had a passion for football as well as drawing from a young age. At the age of eighteen he fought in the Great Patriotic War and at the same time continued to play football. He played on many teams and by 1951 he became the champion of the USSR, retiring from football in 1953. The development of his art training took place after the war. He began to attend Odessa Art School Grekov in 1945 which was interrupted by the war as well as his football career. After his retirement from football he was able to spend all of his time focusing on painting. He became a full member of the Union of the Artists of the USSR in 1963. Seyvastyanov began to become involved in many national art exhibitions, including his most important which was a collective exhibition in Moscow dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Komsomol. After his death in 1993, this family organized a number of exhibitions of his works abroad. He became one of the best-selling Ukrainian artists of the 20th century. His works survive him in collections around the world.
