Millard Owen Sheets

(Pomona, CA, 1907 - 1990, Gualala, CA)

Born in Pomona, California, he was encouraged by his family to pursue a career in painting early in life. He was priveleged to study under a number of talented artists, beginning with Thedore B. Modra, then F. Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. He found that he was quite adept in watercolor painting, and was even asked to teach watercolor classes while going to school. He joined the California Water Color Society, and after graduation took a trip to Europe to study painting. His works were exhibited in galleries across the United States, as well as some in Europe, and he had mentions in several prominent art magazines. He was also invited to teach at a number of fine art institutes, including Chouniard, Scripps College, and the Otis Art Institute. Major recognitions include inclusion in the Carnegie Institute's International Exhibition of Paintings, membership in the National Academy of Design, appointment as a director of the Public Works of Art Project, and founder of the Millard Sheets Design studio in Claremont.
