Winold Riess

(Karlsruhe, Germany, 1886 - 1953, New York City, New York)

Fritz Winold Reiss, more commonly known as Winold Reiss, was born in Germany and grew up in the Black Forest. He studied at the Royal Academy and the Art School in Munich and in 1913 came to America with the intention of painting the American Indians he'd read about since childhood. In 1933 he became an assistant professor at the College of Fine Arts of New York University. He came to be a foremost American painter of Indian portraits, working to capture their customs and characteristics through his art.
