Mai Volfovich Dantsig

(Minsk, 4/27/1930 - 3/26/17, Minsk)

Mai Dantsig was born in Minsk, Belarus in 1930. He studied at the Minsk Art School and the Surikov Art Institute. He has taught at the Belarusian Academy of Art since 1958 and became the head of Department of Painting there in 2001. In 1995, Dantsig was awarded the honor of being named the People's Artist of Belarus and in 2005 was awarded the Order of Francysk Skaryna. Dantsig is famous for his monumental paintings of The Great Patriotic War (World War 2), Soviet Partisans, and Soviet Intelligentsia. Dantsig is considered one of the fathers of contemporary Belorussian art. (SMA Website 3/25/16)
