Deon Duncan

(1962 - )

Deon Duncan has a graduate degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in painting and post-modern critical theory. She had the opportunity to sculpt from the figure, and at the time had what she refers to as the most important epiphany of her life. Prior to that, she had spent twenty-five years working as a painter but never felt the spark, which is what she considers the most important and potent ingredient for passion. I knew within the week of her first project that she was a born sculptor. This was her first time feeling that she truly knew what her talent should be used for. Her enthusiasm to learn bordered on the obsessive. She spent years working hundred hour weeks, and many times resented competing social engagements. She pored over anatomy books, acquired and assembled skeletons in order to learn structure, and talked to any other sculptor she could find. It took her four years to achieve the technical fluency necessary to begin to create the art that she envisioned. It took another year to hone in on subject matter and composition. She now creates artwork she is proud of, finally finding the medium to best express and channels her passions.
