Rose Hartwell

(Salt Lake City, Utah, 1861 - 1917, Salt Lake City, Utah)

Rose Hartwell was a fellow student of Mary Teasdel in France in the first years of the 20th century. She had earlier studied with J. T. Harwood and John W. Clawson in Utah, and then at Académie Julian and Académie Vitti in Montparnasse in Paris. Her work was accepted into the Paris Salon in 1903. She enjoyed studying and painting in Europe and studied with the Spanish painter Claudio Castelucho (1870-1927) and traveled in Italy for eighteen months. She was a friend and painting partner in Giverney with Myra Louise Sawyer where they observed Monet painting. Hartwell developed a richly colored palette with succulent impasto pigmentation. She is best known for her demure paintings of women at the toilette or with children and fancy dress. The above landscape was painted southwest of Paris near Épernon which laid in one of the 82 departments of France, Eure-et-Loir. Harwell spent much of her life in Europe, especially France, studying art and producing paintings.
