Ethel Strauser Paul was an oil painter, who focused on landscape paintings. Born in Missouri, she attended S.E. Missouri State Teachers’ College before going to Brigham Young University, where she studied painting. In the mid twentieth-century many of her works garnered critical notice among the local art scene, earning awards at the Utah and Missouri State Fairs. This scene of nearby Maple Mountain shows Paul’s interest in vivid colors and broad brushstrokes. It was painted the year before Paul was awarded a Teaching Scholarship at BYU.
