Phillipe Regis Deis de Keredern de Trobriand is French born but naturalized United States Citizen who was working on a personal memoir of the Civil War in 1867 before being called back onto the front lines. He was assigned as a commander of the Middle District of the Department of the Dakotas, specifically Fort Stevenson which is in present-day North Dakota. He used this opportunity to continue his lasting interest in paintings. His landscapes and portraits of American Indians have been compared to some of the most well-known even among famous Western Artist’s. He remained in the West, serving in Utah, Montana and Wyoming until 1872 when he was transferred to New Orleans. He retired from the Army in 1879 and divided his time between New Orleans, France and New York, pursing more artistic endeavors. He died in Bayport, New York in 1897.
