Sergei Vasilevich Gerasimov

(1885 - 1964)

As one of the most important Soviet painters, Sergei Gerasimov's early watercolors were considered great masterpieces. He was a teacher at Vkhutemas, a Russian art school, from the 1920s-1930s and it was there that he designed and painted many posters that showed his sympathy to the communist party. He served at director of the Russian Artists' Union until the Stalin era, when he was replaced by Aleksandr Gerasimov. It was only after the death of Stalin and the rise of Nikita Khrushchev that he again became the head of the Russian Artists Union, which he maintained until his death.
