Frank Coburn

(Chicago, IL, 1862 - 1938, Santa Ana, CA)

Frank Coburn was born in Chicago Illinois and studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. While gifted, he believed that talent was something learned, not given at birth, and he labeled himself a self-taught artist. Later on he moved to California, where his career really began to take off. Although he advertised himself as a specialist in landscape paintings, his interests included nudes, portraits, still-life, cities, shipyards and other subjects, mostly local. He often traveled around California in his bus-like vehicle called "El Vagabundo," which also acted as his studio. He style was greatly influenced by French Impressionism.
