From label found in Vault: From a label found in vault: "Although traditionally this work would be labeled as a still-life, works by Wagstaff are more accurately categorized as metaphorical self-portraits. Her subjects -- trees in a landscape, poultry from her backyard, or "treasures" that her daughter brings to her - are ordinary things which have become part of her own being. "I don't look for things to paint," Wagstaff says, "but rather paint waht becomes -- usually over time -- compelling and necessary for me to paint." Highly personal in their symbolism, Wagstaff's commonplace objects are derived from ordinary human experience. Thus, while her depictions of willows in this work may be particular to the artist, these painted motifs project deeply felt emotions because they are chargeerd with the power and familiarity of everyday living. Though undergirded by geometric organization, Wagstaff's paintings remain uncalculated and derive chiefly from intuition. She studied at Brigham Young University, wher she met her husband, the noted artist Clay Wagstaff. --- Rebecca Wetzel Wagstaff is a Utah artist known for her unique still-life paintings. Her subjects are the things surrounding her in her life that she feels compelled to represent - pottery, birds, fruit, her children's treasures and drawings, flowers, and other similar things. Her paintings also often include an element of geometry that is an unmistakeable part of her style. Of her work, she says, "The elements in each painting are symbolic for me—basically, I paint my life. Or, in other words, the elements of my life reappear as elements in my paintings—and those elements, which often happen to have universal symbolic meaning—always have personal symbolic meaning." Rebecca Wagstaff now resides in Tropic, Utah.
