Frederick Ferdinand Schafer
(1839 - 1927)
Frederick Ferdinand Schaefer, an itinerant German landscape painter based in California, worked in Utah in 1886, 1891, and 1893, where he may have had a studio in Salt Lake City's Dooly Building during part of the year. An early 1890's Schafer landscape Salt Lake City Morning (oil on canvas, 14 x 22 inches), which features a view from the northwest of the unfinished Salt Lake Temple standing beside the finished Tabernacle, exists today in the LDS Church Collection. As Linda Jones Gibbs wrote: "Although the city is an important part of the scene, the sunlit snowcapped Wasatch Mountains remain the dominant subject." (Masterworks, pp.6-7)
