Issak Isifovich Tartakovski
(Volochinsk, 1912 - 2003, Kiev, Ukraine)
Born on April 25, 1912 in the town of Volochisk, Ukraine. He entered the Art and Industrial School at the age of fifteen and graduated in 1929. From 1932 to 1937 he studied at the Kiev Institute of Cinematography in the Cinematography Department. He fought in the Great Patriotic War and was demobilized after the war, and he then went on to join the Kiev Art Institute. He graduated with honors in 1951 and participated in many exhibitions, both national and international. Tartakovski specialized in portraits, thematic pictures, and painted many fine landscapes and still lifes, especially in the last years of his life. He was a Member of the USSR Union of Artists, awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine, and in 1993 he was bestowed the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine. He died on June 18, 2002 in Kiev. His works are kept in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Simferopol, Sevastopol Art Museums, Theodosia Art Gallery, and in galleries and private collections in Ukraine and abroad.
