Vladimir Aleksandrovich Serov

(Emmaus, Russia, 1910 - 1968, Moscow, Russia)

Vladimir Alexandrovich Serov was born in the village of Emmaus in 1910, growing up in the devastation that followed the Civil War. However, even as a child he was able to develop his artist abilities. As he grew up he moved to Petrograd and became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts (Leningrad Institute of Proletarian Fine Arts). He began participating in exhibitions in 1932. In this same time he created a number of political posters, still working within the realms of socialist realism. During the Great Patriotic War, Serov headed the Leningrad Union of Artists and directed his work to military and political attacks against fascist invaders. His posters of political statements were aimed at mobilizing soldiers and civilians. After the war, he created works with mostly historical and revolutionary themes. Many of his works were devoted to Lenin.
