Albert Gabriel Rigolot

(Paris, France, 1862 - 1932, Paris, France)

French artist Albert-Gabriel Rigolot was born in Paris, France on November 28, 1862. He showed remarkable talent in art even at a young age, but officially began his artistic endeavors at age 19. Through his twenties he was a student first of Léon Pelouse in 1885, and then of Auguste Allongé in 1889, under whose guidance he extensively explored his abilities. By 1888, Rigolot was a member of the Sociétaire des Artistes Français and a consistent contributor to the Paris Salons. In the late 1890's Rigolot took excursions to Algeria, where he received much of his inspiration for the mystical, luminous landscapes that he would paint throughout his life. There he worked in oils and pastels, painting forests, water landscapes, and riverbanks. Rigolot instructed and influenced John Hafen, Lorus Pratt, J.B. Fairbanks, and Edwin Evans. He took Utah artists on painting trips, giving instruction and demonstrations. His alternating bright and tonal naturalism blended academic and impressionist painting methods. Rigolot died in Paris on April 25, 1932.
