Sarah Richards Samuelson

(1974 - )

Sarah Richards Samuelson was born in Bountiful, Utah, in 1974. Her mother was a florist, and Sarah's childhood was spent around many varieties of flowers, helping her mother and drawing and painting. She continued to work on her skills, attending Brigham Young University, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Following her graduation she taught at Utah Valley University, providing classes in painting, drawing, color theory, and art history. She continues to pursue her art career and is a mother to beautiful daughters. Sarah works in many mediums, including oil, watercolor, and mixed media. Her usual technique is to prepare a background for her paintings with colors from the palette she will be using, and painting abstractly, sometimes with the help of her infant daughter. She then draws the subject onto the background using soft vine charcoal, fixes the drawing onto the canvas, then continues to paint, allowing the process to show through. Sarah paints landscapes, and is very fond of flowers, particularly tulips. On her blog entitled Tulip Painter (tulippainter.blogspot.com), she says this of her favorite subject, tulips: "After the tulips bloom, the other flowers, plants and trees begin to don their colors. They take their cue from the awakening tulips. Tulips are a sign of spring; they are a sign of rebirth. Their splendor begins the new season and encourages the rest of nature to join the celebration. Tulips are the beginning, the hope of things to come, and the reassurance there is indeed a God who loves us and provides for all our needs, leaving us uplifted and edified. Tulips are a significant reminder of rebirth, renewal, and hope of things to come. Red is the color which is a symbol of love, and even more specifically of the Savior's love. It is His blood which makes our own rebirth and renewal possible, and which gives us the greatest hope of all." Sarah's paintings are the way she shares the joy that she feels from the beauty around her. She says "It is incredibly fulfilling to get to have others experience that joy as they view my artwork."
