Maynard Dixon Stewart

(1923 - )

Maynard Dixon "Dick" Stewart of Santa Clara, California, is the son of Leconte Stewart, and was named after his father's friend, Maynard Dixon. Dick Stewart received his initial college training as a painter in the Department of Art at the University of Utah in the 1940s under his father. Maynard Dixon's death in 1946 coincided with Young Stewart's sophomore year in the art program at the U of U. Finding employment at Brigham Young University two years later, Maynard Dixon Stewart worked in close proximity to an extensive collection of the older artist's work owned by BYU. He left that school in 1955 to become a resident "conservative" within the more "progressive" art program of San Jose State in California.
