John Charles Ohran
(Orem, Utah , 1975 - )
John Charles Ohran is an Orem Utah native. He primarily practices a minimal, hard-edge, nonobjective formalist approach to sculpture. He studied at Brigham Young University (B.F.A.) under Neil Wesley Hadlock, who influenced Ohran's rusticated steel surfaces and broad geometric shapes. The Springville Museum of Art is proud to have in its possession works from both Hadlock, the teacher, and Ohran, the student. The two Hadlock works in the Springville are Africa:Kiro (1986) and Effron (1983). The influence of the teacher is clear in Ohran's works, and are manifest in Ohran's monumentality, and expert technicality. However, Ohran's work is more thrifty with its curvaceous lines, giving greater emphasis to geometry and rigid edges.
