Nnamdi Dinobi Okonkwo

(Eastern Nigeria, 1968 - )

Nnamdi Dinobi Okonkwo was born in Nigeria and came to Utah in the mid-1990s after playing basketball for BYU-Hawaii. He received an MFA from BYU-Provo in 1997, thereafter moving to Fayetteville. Okonkwo's work is primarily bronze sculpture. However, he also paints and draws. The work Repentant Magdalene (1995)is an exceptional piece in Okonkwo's oevre. It is typical of his tendency toward stylized curvaceous forms, but possesses a more visceral and gritty interpretation of the "attitudes" he believes his works evince. Okonkwo confesses a great love of the female form in its potential for expressing "...empathy, love, resilience, strength..." as well as an "...outward manifestation of a largeness of soul." Okonkwo works in many sizes of sculpture, from miniature to monumental, and his works can be seen in many public spaces, such as downtown Mesa, Arizona.
