Sir Lawrence Alma-tadema was born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands. Early in life he discovered his affinity for art and trained at the Academy of Antwerp, Belgium. After schooling, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Most of his paintings displayed the vivid colors of the Mediterranean Sea and the immense detail of Roman architecture. Acclimating to the English tradition, he met and befriended most of the major Pre-Raphaelite painters. Due to their influence the the artist brightened his palette, varied his hues, and lightened his brushwork. Universally admired for his depictions of Classical antiquity during his lifetime, his art fell out of consideration after his death and only in the last thirty years has his work been reevaluated for its importance and influence within nineteenth-century English art.
