Homer J. Warren

(1948 - 2002)

Homer J. Warren, of Sweet Water, Arizona and the area around Bluff, Utah, was a Navajo artist. He lived with his wife, Irene, in the Utah portion of the Navajo reservation. After attending schools in several states and serving in Veitnam, Homer Warren returned to Utah to marry Irene (q.v.) and raise a family. Eventually, he began carving the same sandstone toys he had made as a boy. Using the plentiful supply of stone found near the banks of the San Juan River, he carved human figures, animals, and vehicles. While some pieces are carved around the natural coloring of the stone, others are painted with bright colors. He was featured in the Underneath the Western Skies exhibition held by the Utah Arts Council at the Chase Home in Salt Lake City's Liberty Park (1995) and is represented in the State Folk Art Collection. (b. June 16)
