Elaine S. Michelsen Evans

(Fillmore, UT, 1905 - 1994)

Elaine Stevenson Michelsen-Evans of Salt Lake City, Utah, was unique in many ways. Having been appointed art chair at Westminster College in 1951, University of Utah-trained Elaine Michelsen-Evans (B.A., 1927) was the first woman to hold such a position in Utah, and in her day and in her way, she was one of the most prominent and active woman artists in the state. An active member of the International Association for Education through Art, the National League of American Pen Women, the Pacific Art Association, the San Francisco Women Artists, Utah Art Educators Association, etc., Michelsen-Evans exhibited her paintings and studied at various places around the country and in Europe, became the U.S. delegate to the International Congress of Education Through Art at The Hague in 1957, and then in 1959 showed work at the Royal Academy of Art in London. She was married to John H. Evans. Her work had a strong "New Age" bent.
