James Guilford Swinnerton

(1875 - 1974)

James Guilford Swinnerton was a California oil painter who also worked in southern Utah during the 1903-05 period. Swinnerton made his first visit to Utah in a brief stopover while on his honeymoon in 1897. This was captured by A.H. Dutton in one of his early Salt Lake City newspaper cartoons. He was among the best of the group known as the "Palm Springs" desert landscape painters, which included Louis Heinzman.
