Francis "Frank" M. Treseder

(Jersey Island, England, 1853 - 1923, Dallas, Texas)

Francis "Frank" M. Treseder was an oil painter who created some very charming, primitively styled pictures of city buildings, etc. He was the youngest child of Richard D. and Elizabeth MacKay Treseder, whose family arrived in Salt Lake City on October 15, 1862. When Frank Teseder was older, however, he spent three years in the territorial penitentiary for bribery, it was during his time in prison that he turned to painting. It was said that he had quite the passion for it and took ‘as much pleasure in it as a school boy’. He is most noted for his depictions, usually in sets of two, of the penitentiary at Sugarhouse. The Springville Museum of Art has a pair of these paintings.
