Peter M. Fillerup

(Cody, Wyoming, 1953 - 2016)

Born in Cody, Wyoming, this artist now lives in Wapiti, Wyoming. He is one of Avard Fairbanks's most gifted students; he also studied at Brigham Young University in the mid-1970s. Fillerup creates in both bronze and stone, and is increasingly well known for his western and religious subjects. This artist's major commissions include a marble Christ for the Bible Art Center in Dallas, Texas, and a Monument to Kit Carson for the Memorial State Park in Taos, New Mexico. (Carson is probably best known in Utah for mistaking the Great Lake Salt Lake for the Pacific Ocean.) A resident of Heber City, Utah, Fillerup worked on monuments for Grantsville, Heber, and Salt Lake City during a career prolific in the production of pieces both large and small. In fact, the Salt Lake City commission was for five life-size groups to be erected on parkland north of the LDS Church Office Building.
