Robert Lorenzo Shepherd of Santa Clara, Utah, had a rich and varied career in the arts. Dropping out of college during the depression, he became an architectural draftsman, then a muralist working for the LDS Church, first in Salt Lake City and after 1953 in Los Angeles, California. For about a year, he participated in the design of Cecil B. DeMille's production of The Ten Commandments. Also a California-based decorator for fifteen years, Shepherd moved back to Utah upon "retirement" to become the painter of numerous realistic western subjects (essentially landscape themes), mostly in the transparent-watercolor technique.
