Eugene Speicher was an American portrait, landscape, and figurative artist. He was born in Buffalo, New York in April 1883. He began studying art at the Albright Art School. By 1907, Speicher had moved to New York and was attending the Art Students League, studying with prominent artists such as William Merritt Chase and Frank Vincent Du Mond. Speicher continued his studies at the New York School of Art with Robert Henri and the life classes he took their played an important role to his formative style. Because of Speicher’s relationship with Henri, he became acquainted with George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper Guy Pène du Bois, Leon Kroll, and other talented realist artists. Speicher studied the Old Masters in Europe and upon his return, he was considered to be one of the most promising young American painters. Speicher won awards at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. Speicher passed away in 1962, seventeen years after being appointed the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
