Paul Lauritz

(Larvik, Norway, 1889 - 1975, Glendale, California)

Paul Lauritz was born in the small Norwegian town of Larvik. Painters from all over the world traveled to Larvik to paint, thus exposing Lauritz to his first experiences of art while still a young child. He moved to America in 1905 and worked his way across Canada and the United States until settling in Los Angeles in 1919. Lauritz split his time between his studio, where he painted portraits, and teaching at both the Chouinard and Otis Institutes of Art. In 1920, he and his wife relocated and built a home in the hills overlooking the city. He and his wife began exploring and camping throughout the Mojave, Colorado and Arizona deserts which cultivated his fascination for their landscapes. Being very active in the California art scene, he served as a member of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission as well as President of the California Art Club. Lauritz even gave frequent painting demonstrations and workshops for plein air landscape painters.
