Judy Farnsworth Lund Wassmer
(Salt Lake City, UT, 1911 - 1996, Salt Lake City, UT)
Julia "Judy" Farnsworth Wassmer-Lund of Salt Lake City, Utah, was a capable Utah State art director of the FERA and WPA from 1933 (when she was appointed by Governor Henry Blood) to 1937. Lund attended the University of Utah (M.B.A., 1934; M.A., 1936), and then left for New York City in 1938 to work for the Permanent Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Crafts at Rockefeller Center until World War II, when it was closed. She then became a member of the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency until her marriage in 1945 to fellow artist Theodore Milton "Ted" Wassmer, also from Salt Lake City. It was at this time that Judy Lund Wassmer took up a painting career with her husband. Attending the Art Students League for three years, she developed a nice impressionistic style in landscape depiction, and was also an interesting figure painter. In 1952 the Wassmers moved to Woodstock, New York, where they continued to paint for the next thirty-three years and also developed a fine collection of art. The Wassmers returned to Salt Lake City in the mid-1980s, where they donated over 900 paintings from the Lund-Wassmer Collection to museums and galleries in Brigham City, Fairview, Ephraim, Logan, and Springville before her death at the age of eighty-four. Judy will always be remembered for her grace and compassion in fostering artists and their arts in Utah.
