Angel Botello

(Galicia, Spain, 1913 - 1986, San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Angel Botello was born in the town of Cangas de Morrazo in Galicia, Spain in a family of six. After his parent's business fell into bankruptcy, the family moved to France where he and his only brother Manuel went to school at the École des Beaux-Arts. They both graduated in honors and excelled in their art classes. Botello moved back to Madrid, Spain to further his studies at the School of Art of the San Fernando Academy. He put his studies on pause when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. He and his brother joined the Republican Army, but the Nationalists ended up winning and his brother died during the war. Angel and his family left Europe and moved to Dominican Republic when he was about 26 years old. There, Botello and his art was warmly accepted . He was invited to display his paintings in the "Latin American Art Exposition" at the Riverside Museum in 1940 and in Prince-au-port, Haiti in 1944. In Haiti, he met and married Christiane Auguste. Botello stayed in Haiti where he taught the natives woodcarving and became, to them, the father of woodcarving. Angel and his family later moved to Puerto Rico where he remained the rest of his life. They set up two art galleries; the first was in the Caribe Hilton Hotel and the second in the colony Old San Juan. Angel Botello was a heavy smoker and was diagnosed with cancer in 1985. However, this only pushed him to increase more artwork. During his last year Botello created 22 scultpures in large format. Throughout his life, Botello created oil paintings, woodcarving, bronze sculptures, prints, photography, and mosaics. He was inspired by the tropical colors found in Puerto Rico, and from the 1960's until his death, his artwork focused on his love for his wife and three children.
