Elinor Morrison Barnard
(London, England, 1872 - 1942, New York City, NYC, USA)
Elinor M. Barnard was born in London, England, to a prominent art family. She studied painting
with her aunt and uncle, and would later live with the family of William Archer, a London
dramatic critic and producer. Barnard would help design and paint theatrical productions under
Archer. She also painted numerous portraits of children for wealthy individuals like the late Earl
of Oxford and Asquith, Herbert H. Asquith, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain
during the first phase of WWI.
Barnard traveled to the United States in 1913 and continued to paint portraits of children and
grandchildren for wealthy gilded age industrialists like J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford. She married
American author, Manuel Komroff, in 1918. The couple divorced in 1937, during which time
Barnard is believed to have been touring parts of South America.
Throughout her career, Barnard taught and demonstrated her watercolor techniques to young
students in New York and in the West. She made New York her home but traveled often
throughout the United States to complete commissions; she was known to paint strangers and
give them her work as a thank-you.
Elinor passed away in New York City on February 16, 1942.
