Maurice Edmund Brooks, of Salt Lake City, was a fine sculptor. Nevada-born, Brooks began art lessons at age sixteen at the University of Utah with J. T. Harwood (q.v.) and A. B. Wright (q.v.). He also studied with sculptors Torleif Knaphus (q.v.) and Gilbert Griswold, who did the Mormon Battalion Monument, which is located on the Utah State Capitol grounds. Yet, Brooks later credited sculptor Millard F. Malin (q.v.) as his most important mentor. Serving and apprenticing with Malin beginning around 1925 (Brooks was with him for approximately eight years), he also worked on Malin's Salt Lake City; located Sugarhouse Pioneer Monument during that time. A teacher at Salt Lake City's Art Barn (SLAC) during Works Project Administration/Federal Arts Project days, Brooks managed to pick up some federal commissions. He also assisted Malin on sculptural works for LDS temples in Bern, London, Los Angeles, and New Zealand. He was hired by Thomas Child to assist in construction of the Gilgal Sculpture Garden in Salt Lake City. Otherwise, Brooks did many portrait busts and figure studies (often only in plaster) in a straightforward realist style. Brooks died on December 1, 1970 in Salt Lake City, and his funeral was held at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
