Frank Alton Van Wagenen was born in Provo in 1911 to Alma Van Wagenen and Birdie Gray Van Wagenen. He attended Provo City schools as a youth, then studied at Brigham Young University, graduating in 1936. He majored in business with a minor in art. He was the first student to study calligraphy at BYU, and became a noted calligrapher and illuminator, nicknamed "Provo's King of the Ink Pen." He married Phyllis Barker in Salt Lake City in 1937 and raised six children with her.
