Jonas Lie

(Moss, Norway, 1880 - 1940, New York City, NY)

Jonas Lie was born in Norway in 1880 and lived there until the age of twelve when his father died. He then went to live with his uncle in Paris for a short time and finally settled with his mother in New York. He studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League. Jonas Lie visited Utah around 1917 and did a series of views of the copper mining at Bingham Canyon. One of these views is located in the Marriott Library on the University of Utah campus. Lie is known for having a light-infused palette dominated by cool tones, and a simple but striking composition to his paintings.
