Michael Ritter Cannon

(Utah, Salt Lake City, 1913 - 1982, Utah, Bountiful)

A teacher, exhibitor, and award-winning oil painter, Cannon was an active member of the local arts community with early training at the University of Utah (B.A., 1934). After graduation, he went to the University of Utah Law School for two years before entering into additional studio work at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles (1938-41). Returning to Utah soon afterward, he joined the Salt Lake Art Center Art Barn staff (1942-60) and quickly became an active member of both the Utah Creative Artists and the Associated Utah Artists; he served as AUA president in later years. Specializing in restrained still-life subjects for painted works, Cannon exhibited convincing qualities of sharply apprehended light.
