Janet Kruskamp

(Grants Pass, Oregon, 1934 - )

A romantic realist painter of American scenes that show urban and rural lifestyles, Janet Kruskamp has been a resident of Los Gatos, California. She applies a white gesso surface to her paintings that give a luminous quality to the finished work. Her subjects include children, back yards, railroad ties, or crumbling walls. Coinciding with the American Bicentennial, she traveled more than 30,000 miles by car across the United States to study and sketch most of the states of the Union. Janet's artistic talents surfaced very early in life. Her father once joked that she was born with crayons in one hand and a paint brush in the other! By the age of two Janet was already a prolific artist drawing such characters as the Planters' Peanut Man and many Disney characters. She would creep behind the clothing in her parent’s walk-in closet and draw on the walls, which soon led her parents to supply her with proper artists’ materials. From grammar school on Janet began winning numerous awards and honors for her artwork and at age eleven, she was given a one "woman” show at a local arts and recreation center in Burbank, California including a newspaper article regarding the event. While still in high school, Janet was awarded scholarships to the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from high school with honors for her artistic and musical accomplishments including the Bank Of America Achievement Award For Fine ArtsJanet continued painting, winning awards exhibiting her work in galleries and very soon art museums and also held numerous one woman shows. Janet also found time to teach private art classes for adults and children, and she also juried art competitions and was president of the local art association. Says Janet, ”When someone who hasn’t seen me for a while asks me if I am still painting, I wonder in amazement at their question! I guess they don’t realize, being an artist is not just what I do, IT’S WHO I AM!
