Stephen Reid Beck

(Salt Lake City, UT, 1937 - 2002, Mesquite, NV)

Stephen "Steve" Reid Beck, painter, educator, and filmmaker, was born in Salt Lake City. He studied at the University of Utah (B.F.A., 1963) and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (M.F>A., 1964). His teaching experiences included work as chairman of art curriculum at Kingswood School in Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (1962-67); instructor of drawing and painting, administrative assistant to chair, assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Utah (1968-75); Westminster College in Salt Lake City (1975-78); freelance artist and other pursuits in Salt Lake City, Cedar City, and so on (1978-present). This talented painter probed the world of recognizable form to find essence and basis for abstraction with the use of a spray-acrylic technique. Many of Beck's works are deft, designed, and highly sensuous all at once. His drawing skill has a quickness about it that is very rewarding in the way of following an intuitive line "hell-bent" for stylish solution. At the end of one of his cunning "meanders," the viewer may find a suggestive visual pun more fun than originally expected.
