Alfred Herrmann Schroff was born in Springfield, Massechussetts on December 26, 1863. He studied at Cowles' Art School, as well as under Major, Chaminski, and De Camp. He did much in Boston during the earlier years of his career, and in 1915 he moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he taught as an art professor at the University of Oregon for many years. In the 1920s and 30s he owned a home in Carmel, California, and during the summers he taught at the University of California. He died in 1939. Alfred Schroff is one of Oregon's most highly respected landscape painters.
