Russell Cowles

(Algona, Iowa, 1887 - 1979, New York City, New York)

Born in Algona Iowa in 1887, Cowles was encouraged to pursue painting by his mother, who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He graduated from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, and later studied in Paris. He also studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Art Students' League, assisting artists Douglas Volk and Barry Faulkner. After his Prix De Rome fellowship he traveled to China, Japan, and Santa Fe, where he worked for many years. Accolades include a medal from the Art Institute of Chicago, a prize in the New York World's Fair, and Fellowship to the American Academy at Rome.
