Whitaker, born in Providence, R.I., at the age of fourteen quit school and went to work at W.J. Feeley Co., by the age of sixteen he was an apprentice to a designer. Seven years later, at the age of twenty-three he was the head of design there. He went on to work as a designer at five different locations, including two companies that he bought and built up. When he retired in ‘49 he went on to devote his time to watercoloring, serving as the president of the American Watercolor Society for seven years. He won numerous awards for his work and also wrote two books about watercoloring as well wrote several art related articles.
