Chauncey Foster Ryder

(Danbury, CT, 1868 - 1949, Wilton, NH)

Chauncey Ryder was born in Danbury, Conneticut in 1868. He began pursuing an interest in art at a young age, and in his early twenties moved to Chicago, where he studied first at the Art Institute there, and then at Smith's Academy where he became an instructor after one year as a student. His desire to study art in Paris led him to move to France in 1891, where he studied at the Academie Julien and exibited at the Paris Salon regularly for six years. He moved to New York around 1908, and from there showed his work in both New York and Paris. He opened a studio in New York in 1909. Beginning in 1910 he traveled around New England, which would provide much of the subject matter for his later paintings. Until the end of his life he continued to gain popularity for his recognizable "Ryder Green" style. Ryder's paintings are included in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, CT and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, among others.
