Douglas Arthur Teed

(Utica, NY, 1864 - 1929, Detroit, MI)

Douglas Arthur Teed was born on February 21 to Fidelia and Cyrus Teed. He began painting at a very young age, and by the time he was 14 he had even opened up his own study. Throughout his youth he spent many hours studying in the studio of George Inness, whose style of tonalist landscape painting would be a great influence in Teed's own work. He later opened a studio in Rome, where he found much inspiration in the landscapes, architecture, and paintings done by the old masters. His paintings done there reflect the popular techniques of the time. After returning to his New York studio in 1895, he made an income doing landscapes and portraits, some of very prominent people. His works as a portraitist were highly praised, but he never much enjoyed painting them. Teed spent four years in the middle east, finding inspiration for his oriental and Islamic themed art.
